From A
Christmas Story to 16
Candles:
80ıs
movies take the cake
Kelsey
Landolt and Emily Kemp
Youıre sitting in your living room, at any given time, and
you flip on the TV. Chances are you will find an 80ıs movie that has been on
the same channel, at the same time for the past month. Even though you have
seen it 20 times, it never gets old.
Our generation has
grown up watching 80ıs movies. Starting at a young age our eyes were opened to
a world of theater. These Movies included The Little Mermaid and ET.
The Little Mermaid is a Disney
classic that is likely to be in every childıs movie selection. Freshman Brooke Buddaıs favorite 80's
movie is The Little Mermaid. "My
favorite part is when they are talking about using the dingle hopper."
Even during the
holidays TV stations stick to the 80ıs movies. A Christmas Story is a movie that consistently brings families
together during the holiday season. Junior Jay Warrenıs favorite movie is A
Christmas Story. "The best part
of the movie is when his tongue gets stuck to the pole." She likes 80ıs movies because ³the
story lines arenıt complicated and the comedy is pure comedy-not as much
reference to sex and drugs.²
When the holidays
are over, you can still catch movies like Ferris Buellerıs Day Off and Dirty Dancing playing on your favorite channels. Ferris Bueller is a classic 1986 movie where Ferris, played by
Mathew Broderick, gets tired of school and fakes being sick. While tricking his
parents, teachers, and principal, he sneaks out for a day of fun instead of
lectures and routine. Sophomore Siera Cernyıs favorite line is, ³Life moves
pretty fast, and if you donıt stop to look around, you might miss it.² She
enjoys 80ıs movies because she, ³Likes the clothes and the culture of the 80ıs,
and how teens were back then.²
A year after the
premiere of Ferris Bueller, Dirty
Dancing starring Jennifer Grey as
³Baby², debuted in theaters. Baby
spends the summer in a holiday camp with her family and falls in love with the
campıs dancing teacher. Dirty Dancing left people wanting more which led to the recent sequel, Dirty
Dancing: Havana Nights.
The undeclared King and Queen of 80ıs movies are16
Candles and The Breakfast Club. These two movies both star Molly Ringwald and
others from the well known ³Brat Pack.² These movies are on TV at any time when
there is dead air.
The Breakfast
Club is a movie about five
completely different teenagers stuck in detention. When you mix the popular boy
and the rebel boy you know there will be turmoil. Adventures through the school
in an effort to avoid the principal, make for many awkward encounters and huge
laughs.
The 80ıs movies
still have an impact on the Marian community today as the 1988 movie Hairspray
was chosen to be the choir theme of
this year's pops concert.
80ıs movies have
been a great source of entertainment. From Princess Bride to Batman, and from Goonies to Back
to the Future, 80ıs movies have left
lasting impressions. Marian girls have grown up with these movies, and hold a
place in their hearts for them. These movies, like themselves, were made in the
80ıs.
